We sell time - your time - to you.
Any hardware or technology we employ is merely a means to an end, which is delivering more time every day to our customers – time to put into making their own businesses more successful. The less time spent on management and administration, the more time they actually have to provide revenue-generating services.
We achieve this by building automation solutions, both packaged and bespoke, using all Microsoft Office products, but mainly with Excel as a hub.
Microsoft Excel Most, if not all, businesses today rely to some extent on Microsoft Excel to produce management and other important business data. Few would disagree with that.
Equally, few would disagree that most people’s knowledge and use of Excel is pretty abysmal, and that spreadsheets are mainly used as a kind of glorified calculator or aide-memoir. Most spreadsheets almost work in spite of themselves rather than because of any great skill or expertise in setting them up.
Yet good, well-designed, properly functional spreadsheets are capable of making a major contribution to the success of any size of business, by being used to manage and control processes rather than simply helping a person manage the process.
Successful use of Excel depends on two factors: firstly, you need to know your way round the product reasonably well, but secondly and far more importantly, you need to know how to design and build computer systems.
Imagine you’ve just bought a new car and sit poring endlessly through the user manual so that you learn every nuance of the SatNav and the sound system, every facet of the wipers and lights, how to fine-tune the heating and ventilation systems and make the finest adjustment on your electric seats and mirrors (if you’re lucky enough to have them), optimum revs for each gear change, etc. so that you know everything there is to know about your new pride and joy. But if you don’t actually know how to drive, you’re going nowhere.
So it is with Excel. You can know the product intimately but if you don’t know how to design and build ‘proper’ computer systems, it’s all a bit of a waste of time - literally. Poorly constructed spreadsheets are responsible for colossal time-wasting. Badly-written validation rules, for example, instead of helping with input, just get in the way and make use of the spreadsheet difficult and unforgiving.
Time and again we investigate other people’s problem spreadsheets and find that they were written by some lowly admin assistant – maybe even a student working the school holidays. Is it any wonder that the spreadsheets cause problems?
